Cybercriminals who infiltrated the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport’s system (USA) have stated they are willing to restore access to encrypted data in exchange for 100 BTC (approximately $6.4 million).

The attack occurred on August 24, 2024. Although airport personnel managed to retain control over most critical systems, the hackers succeeded in encrypting a portion of the information. Airport officials acknowledged that personal data of employees and passengers may have been compromised. Currently, the airport is operating in a limited capacity, while cybersecurity experts are working to restore the system and prevent further data breaches.

The FBI and other law enforcement agencies are investigating the incident, though it remains unclear whether the hackers can be tracked down and control over the data regained without paying the ransom. Officials are urging against complying with the attackers’ demands, as paying the ransom could potentially encourage further attacks.
