Residents of Granbury, Texas, have filed a lawsuit against MARA (formerly Marathon Digital) due to noise coming from a nearby cryptocurrency mining facility.
More than twenty individuals have stated that the mining center is a “source of discomfort,” causing severe irritation. They complained about “sensory, emotional, and psychological impacts” as well as “constant” noise and vibrations that negatively affect their health.
Among the symptoms cited by the plaintiffs are fatigue, headaches, memory problems, hearing loss, migraines, tinnitus, and other ailments, according to court documents.
“Residents can hear the noise from MARA and feel the vibrations even in their homes,” the lawsuit states.
The company is also accused of driving up electricity costs due to excessive energy consumption and lowering property values in the area.
Rodrigo Cantu, a lawyer representing Earthjustice, demanded that MARA immediately reduce the noise pollution or cease operations entirely.
The residents are asking the court to order the company to halt operations, pay compensation, and cover legal costs.
As a reminder, in September, residents of Hadsel, Norway, succeeded in closing down a cryptocurrency mining center due to noise, which led to a sharp increase in electricity bills.
