This is equivalent to around $16 million, distributed among 54,700 unique addresses. The goal of the airdrop was to reward users of the Superchain ecosystem, which unites rollups built on the OP Stack. Networks whose activity was considered in the token distribution included OP Mainnet, Base, Zora, Mode, Metal, Fraxtal, and others.

The participants were wallets that interacted with at least 20 smart contracts within the Superchain from March 15 to September 15, 2024. Individual distributions were increased through bonuses, awarded for additional actions such as delegating OP or using seven different protocols within the ecosystem.

The tokens must be claimed by February 13, 2025, or they will be forfeited. This is already the fifth distribution by Optimism — previously, over 265 million tokens have been distributed. As of now, approximately 550 million OP tokens remain for future airdrops, which will be allocated as the ecosystem develops.

The first airdrop took place on May 31, 2022, followed by distributions on February 9, 2023, September 18, 2023, and February 20, 2024. In the 24 hours following the fifth airdrop, the OP token price dropped by 6%, and at the time of writing, the token is trading at $1.53, more than 68% below the all-time high recorded in March 2024, according to CoinGecko.

As a reminder, in May, the Optimism developers expanded the capabilities of the OP Stack by adding support for third-layer networks, opening up new scaling opportunities.
