Financial Evolution of X

The social network X (formerly Twitter) has taken another step toward transforming into a global financial platform. The new Cashtags feature now allows users to track stock quotes and cryptocurrency rates directly within their news feed.

How Cashtags Work

The mechanics of interacting with financial data have become highly intuitive. According to Nikita Bier, X’s Head of Product, the system operates as follows:

  • Smart Search: When entering an asset ticker (e.g., $BTC or $TSLA) or a smart contract address, the algorithm automatically suggests a relevant tag.
  • Interactive Data: Clicking a tag opens a dedicated window featuring a real-time price chart and a curated selection of related posts.
  • Direct Trading: For users in Canada, an integration with the broker Wealthsimple has been implemented — a dedicated button allows for an instant transition to buying or selling the asset.

Currently, the functionality is available to iPhone users in the US and Canada. Global release dates for other regions have not yet been disclosed.

The “Everything App” Strategy

Despite close integration with trading platforms, X does not plan to become a broker itself. Nikita Bier emphasized that the company’s goal is to develop informational tools, rather than direct transaction processing.

Nevertheless, the launch of Cashtags is just one part of Elon Musk’s grand plan to create a “super app.” Several major updates are expected in the near future:

  1. X Money: Early access to a digital wallet for P2P transfers is expected to open as early as April.
  2. Team Expansion: To execute these ambitious goals, X has hired Benjy Taylor (formerly of Aave and Base) as the Head of Design.

Context: X’s journey toward multi-functionality isn’t always smooth. For instance, the XChat messenger announced in June 2025 — featuring encryption and file sharing — met with mixed reactions and criticism from the community.

The launch of Cashtags confirms that, despite any skepticism, X is systematically implementing fintech solutions, turning the social network into a full-fledged professional tool for investors and crypto enthusiasts.
