In the first half of the year, public Bitcoin miners cut their realized hash rate by 56 EH/s—a roughly 15% reduction in total capacity. Rather than a sign of industry capitulation, most of this power was physically reallocated to upgrade infrastructure for AI workloads.

Miners possess what Big Tech desperately lacks: large-scale power allocations, cheap electricity, and ready-made industrial sites. Several public miners have already transitioned about 10% of their power capacity to AI infrastructure, with that proportion growing rapidly.

Transformation Economics: Skyrocketing Revenue vs. Massive Capex

The initial results are already showing up on balance sheets. Second-quarter revenue from HPC and AI jumped 52% compared to Q1. For several major players, revenue from HPC colocation and cloud AI services surpassed their shrinking Bitcoin mining operations for the first time.

However, converting ASIC-based facilities into AI-grade data centers requires immense capital:

  • Investment Scale: Miners have already spent over $30 billion on infrastructure transformation.
  • Capital Expenditure (Capex): Building Tier 3/4 data centers requires high-end GPUs, liquid cooling, and ultra-low-latency networking. For six leading providers reporting regular HPC revenue, corporate Capex exceeded their combined quarterly revenue by nearly 15 times.

  • HPC and AI Infrastructure rely on multi-year Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with predictable cash flows, often passing energy cost fluctuations directly to clients.
  • Bitcoin Mining remains fully exposed to asset price swings, network difficulty adjustments, and fluctuating transaction fees.
  • Altcoin Mining (e.g., Zcash) currently offers high yields per MWh, but its price volatility and limited liquidity make it unsuitable for large-scale corporate strategy.

Bitcoin miners are evolving beyond single-purpose crypto farms into core infrastructure providers for the AI economy. Despite massive upfront capital costs, the long-term economics strongly favor diversification into high-performance computing.
