“AI is Destroying Decentralization”

The rapid rise of artificial intelligence is turning into an unexpected crisis for the Web3 industry. Federico Variola, CEO of the Phemex cryptocurrency exchange, issued a stark warning on Cointelegraph’s Chain Reaction podcast: the current AI boom is doing far more harm than good to the digital asset market. In his view, the technology is not only draining investor attention but actively undermining the fundamental pillars of crypto—from cybersecurity to the very concept of decentralization.

Two Fronts of Pressure: Capital Outflow and the Hacker Vanguard

The executive’s primary concerns stem from a dual blow AI is dealing to cryptocurrency ecosystems:

  • Liquidity Drain: Institutional and retail capital is flowing en masse away from Web3 and DeFi toward Big Tech and AI model development.
  • Cyber Warfare Asymmetry: Neural networks have become powerful force multipliers for malicious actors, allowing them to pinpoint complex code vulnerabilities within seconds.

The resulting surge in cybersecurity expenses is pushing startups to the brink of survival. Smaller DeFi projects can no longer compete with industry giants in code defense, inevitably driving out independent developers and accelerating market centralization.

The Coldcard Incident and the Collapse of Bug-Free Code

Variola’s warnings are backed by recent high-profile incidents. In a July attack, hackers drained $116 million from Coldcard hardware wallets, compromising over 5,200 addresses. Analysts strongly believe the critical vulnerability was discovered using specialized AI scanners.

Coinkite CEO Rodolfo Novak urged developers to abandon their illusions, noting that deep-analysis algorithms detect bugs in smart contracts and firmware far faster and more effectively than human auditing teams. This directly jeopardizes key industry values:

  • Non-Custodial Storage: Increasingly sophisticated attack vectors make self-custody far too risky for everyday users.
  • Social Engineering Defense: AI deepfakes and personalized phishing render traditional user caution ineffective, forcing individuals to worry about threats they never previously considered.

Corporate Paradox: The Utility of AI Agents vs. Systemic Risk

Variola’s position appears somewhat paradoxical given Phemex’s own strategy: back in February, the exchange announced a major rollout of AI across its internal operations. Clarifying the contradiction, the CEO noted that individual businesses must leverage available tools to optimize operations and build useful products (such as AI agents for portfolio analysis and trading advice). However, at the macro level, the technology’s negative footprint on the broader Web3 ecosystem significantly outweighs its localized benefits.

The Reality of Cyberattacks (2025 – 1H 2026)

Data from an F6 report covering 2025 through the first half of 2026 confirms these grim projections. AI tools have firmly embedded themselves into real-world cyberattacks across every stage:

  • Automated Reconnaissance: Instant discovery of zero-day vulnerabilities and scanning of open repositories.
  • Exploit Generation: Creation of adaptive malware designed to bypass traditional security systems.
  • Attack Scaling: The ability for hackers to execute hundreds of targeted attacks simultaneously without extra headcount.

Under these circumstances, the crypto industry must fundamentally rethink its security architecture—or the vision of decentralized finance risks being reduced to a mere historical idea.
