On Craig Wright’s personal website, a legal notice was published stating that he is not Satoshi Nakamoto. In 2021, the Crypto Open Patent Alliance (COPA) initiated legal action against the Australian businessman, seeking to prevent him from suing developers and other members of the crypto community, as well as from claiming intellectual property rights related to Bitcoin technology. In March 2023, British judge James Mellor ruled that Wright is neither the creator of the first cryptocurrency nor the author of the white paper.
According to the statement, Wright “extensively and repeatedly lied to the court” in his testimonies and “massively” forged documents to present them as evidence.
Users on X noted that Wright’s publication of the court release on his page should not be seen as a personal acknowledgment of his failure as “pseudo-Satoshi.”
However, the court has prohibited Wright from initiating new legal actions based on his “false claims” or encouraging third parties to do so.
In April 2020, Wright himself dropped his defamation lawsuit against Blockstream CEO Adam Back and paid for Back’s legal costs. He made a similar decision in his case against Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin.
In May 2022, Wright accused several cryptocurrency exchanges of trading “fake” Bitcoin, claiming that only Bitcoin SV remains true to the original protocol. It should be noted that Judge Mellor has referred the documents from Wright’s case to the UK prosecution for investigation into potential criminal charges of perjury and document forgery.
